Top Prize Awarded to City Schools

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY —New York City has won the prestigious Broad Foundation prize praising student achievement. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

REPORTER: The foundation's experts visited urban districts around the country. It praised New York City in particular for progress in closing the achievement gap between white and minority students. Test scores for black and Hispanic students also went up more last year than they did in similar districts across the state. New York City has been nominated for the Broad prize twice before and the big win was a vindication for Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

BLOOMBERG: Successes come one at a time, but we're going to make sure every child that we possibly can is going to get the education that they deserve.

REPORTER: The city will receive $500,000 for college scholarships. But the critics persist, with a few parents groups objecting to the prize because they claim the mayor hasn't included them enough in his reforms. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
