Post 9/11 Security Improvements Continue

by Bob Hennelly

NEW YORK, NY September 11, 2007 —In years following 9/11, hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on improving the region's security and first responder capabilities. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.

Security experts say the region is a harder target than it was 6 years ago. And federal and city law enforcement agencies have cooperatively worked counter-terrorism cases since. The NYPD also reports that federal funding has become more flexible to help cover the city's counter-terrorism costs, thanks in part to money from Washington. The Police Department says it's on schedule to deploy 3,000 security cameras in lower Manhattan.

But, several incidents like this summer's MTA subway meltdown due to flooding and the fatal Deutsche Bank fire show just how much still needs to be done when it comes to communication with the public and between agencies. And that work, experts say, is not just about more money or new technology, but about fostering a change in bureaucratic culture. For WNYC, I'm Bob Hennelly.
