NEW YORK, NY August 23, 2007 —This week, Prosecutors began presenting evidence to a grand jury in the case of a Guatemalan immigrant found dying on a desolate road in Westchester county. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.

The death of Rene Perez occurred about 4 months ago. It was ruled a homicide and the medical examiner said the homeless man likely died from a blow to the abdomen. Perez was last seen alive by 3 police officers who responded to his drunken 911 call from a laundromat in Mt. Kisco.

The officers themselves have been a focus of the investigation. On Monday, WCBS TV reported the police car of one of the officer's, George Bubaris, was seen on the video surveillance camera of a private estate near where the immigrant was found. The Westchester District Attorney's office would not confirm that or comment on the probe.

An attorney for Officer Bubaris told a local newspaper his client went back on patrol after leaving the laundromat and there's no proof Perez was ever in his car. For WNYC, I'm Cindy Rodriguez.
