NEW YORK, NY August 14, 2007 —Governor Elliot Spitzer conducted a whirlwind tour in New York yesterday to announce economic plans for the city. He's trying to push aside the trooper spy scandal. WNYC's Elaine Rivera with with the Governor in Brooklyn.

His sleeves rolled up and his face red from a walking tour with small businessmen in East New York, Spitzer appears to be putting his own agenda back on track. He said he would help small businesses cut through the state's red tape so they can expand and create more jobs. Earlier, he visited Harlem where he announced an economic security proposal that would help low-income New Yorkers.

Spitzer says he's not deterred by the scandal, in which two of his top aides were accused of improperly using state police to spy on Republican Majority Leader Joe Bruno. But four investigations remain underway. Several legislators say it has become a distraction and U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney issued a statement contending that the multiple inquiries could paralyze the state government.
