Students Lobby City for Mental Health Funding

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY June 12, 2007 —Hundreds of students, parents, and mental health advocates lobbied the city council today for more money for services in the public schools. Fifteen-year-old Delania Contreras says her visits with a social worker have helped improve her relationship with her mother.

CONTRERAS: If we have a problem or stuff, they help us, like if we have problems with our family, problems with school, they give us advices and stuff, so they're like friends.

REPORTER: Councilwoman Gale Brewer says there are 100-thousand teens on waiting lists for city mental health services. Advocates want six million dollars to fund programs, and ten million dollars for clinic renovations.
