Activists Push for Inquiry Into Filtration Plant

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY June 01, 2007 —A group of Bronx representatives and activists are calling for an investigation into the cost overruns at the Croton Water Treatment Plant in Van Cortlandt Park.

REPORTER: Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz has formally requested that the city's look into nearly $2 billion in the cost overruns for the estimated $1.3 billion project. He says that could be the largest in the city's history.

DINOWITZ: The numbers just keep growing and growing and all we have to show for it is a giant hole in the ground in what used to be parkland in the Bronx

REPORTER: But Emily Lloyd, commissioner for the city's Department of Environmental Protection which oversees the project, says the $1.3 billion was an early estimate from four years ago. She says the jump is primarily due to skyrocketing construction costs. There were also unanticipated costs related to a more detailed design of the facility.
