Room for Green in City’s Surplus

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY April 27, 2007 —Mayor Bloomberg's revised budget includes $200 million for the long-term environmental initiatives he proposed on Earth Day. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

The mayor wants to reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions 30% by the year 2030. His controversial plan to charge drivers entering Manhattan requires state approval. But he's set aside a few items in his new budget that don't.

Among them: $25 million for spurring the cleanup of toxic lots; $8 million for a bicycle path network; and $3.5 million for converting underused school yards into playgrounds. Bloomberg also wants to dedicate $80 million for making city buildings more energy efficient. The mayor has called for a new authority which could borrow money to fund mass transit improvements.

His budget includes $50 million to start the authority - which he envisions getting matching funds from the state and revenues from congestion pricing. But creating such a new funding mechanism also requires state approval. For WNYC, I'm Beth Fertig.
