Spitzer Doesn’t Think Empire State is Ready for Gay Marriage
by Karen DeWitt
ALBANY, NY April 23, 2007 —Governor Eliot Spitzer says he will introduce a bill before the end of the legislative session to legalize gay marriage. Karen DeWitt reports from Albany.
REPORTER: Spitzer did not list legalizing gay marriage as one of his top priorities of the end of the legislative session when he announced his agenda a few days ago. The governor says he did not mean the issue was not important, only that he did not believe the senate and assembly would approve the measure this year.
SPITZER: I do not think it has a realistic shot to get passed. But I will submit it because was a statement of principal that I believe in and I want to begin that dynamic.
REPORTER: Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, who refused to divulge his views on gay marriage, says he needs to see weather the majority of democratic members want to support the bill. In Albany, I'm Karen DeWitt.
