Driver Who Caused Corzine Crash Not Charged
by Brian Zumhagen
NEW YORK, NY April 15, 2007 —New Jersey State Police have declined to charge the pickup truck driver who left the scene of a crash that critically injured Governor Corzine on the Garden State Parkway Thursday evening. The 20-year-old man, who was found Friday night at an Atlantic City casino where he works, told investigators he was trying to make room for the governor's motorcade. WNYC's Brian Zumhagen has more:
ZUMHAGEN: The pickup truck driver says he didn't stop because he did not realize he had been involved in an accident. The man's name has not been released because he hasn't been charged. Still, authorities say their investigation is not complete and that the driver could face other charges in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Governor Corzine remains in critical but stable condition on a ventilator and is unable to speak. Surgery on the governor's injured leg was successful yesterday at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, and another operation is planned for Monday.
The governor, who was not wearing his seat belt in the front passenger's seat, remains heavily sedated to deal with pain from 12 broken ribs, and several other broken bones.
