City Council Discusses, Approves Several Bills
by Kathleen Horan
NEW YORK, NY March 15, 2007 —The City Council was busy yesterday with votes on everything from fats to bats. WNYC's Kathleen Horan has this round-up.
The most controversial bill, if signed into law by Mayor Bloomberg, will ban the use of metal bats in high-school baseball games. Supporters say the ban will make baseball safer for the city's youth. But the metal bat industry may try to fight it with a legal challenge. Also, the council voted 47 to 1 that commercial bike riders, like delivery workers, are provided helmets at their employers' expense.
A bill passed to codify the trans-fat ban into the city's administrative code so it can't be changed at the whim of another mayor. Finally, the City Council voted to approve the partners for full equality bill which requires that domestic partners receive equal access to any benefits provided by the city that it now provides to spouses - including healthcare and rental assistance.
Mayor Bloomberg also signed several bills into law yesterday, but at the last minute he backed off one that would regulate the pedicab industry. The mayor said he needed more time to think about the measure. It was the first time a bill was presented to the mayor and then not signed.
