Increases in New York’s Deposit Program
by Amy Eddings
NEW YORK, NY March 14, 2007 —A recycling company says a bill in Albany to expand the state's bottle deposit program would undermine the city's recycling program. WNYC's Amy Eddings reports.
Sims Hugo Neu is about to enter into a 20 year contract with the sanitation department to process its metal, glass, and plastic. Sims Hugo Neu recycling manager, Tom Outerbridge says the deal with the city could become more expensive, because the bottle bill would divert some $3 million worth of plastic water and juice bottles out of the city's recycling stream each year.
Judith Enck, environmental advisor to Governor Spitzer, says Sims Hugo Neu should work out its concerns with the city, rather than jeopardize a bill that is being hailed by environmental groups around the state. For WNYC, I'm Amy Eddings.
