Cancellor Appoints Head of "Parent Engagement"

by Beth Fertig

WNYC NEWSROOM February 28, 2007 —Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Joel Klein have appointed a new head of Parent Engagement. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

REPORTER: Brooklyn parent Martine Guerrier will assume the title of Chief Family Engagement Officer. The longtime parent organizer will be responsible for strengthening contact between schools and parents, while also representing them as a member of the Chancellor's inner circle.

The announcement follows a midyear change in busing routes that angered many parents, and concerns over another upcoming round of school reforms. Neither Klein nor Bloomberg acknowledged any connection. But Guerrier said her appointment marked a fresh start.

GUERRIER: There's an opportunity to do things better and this is a great time to do it.

REPORTER: Meanwhile, the teachers union and several community groups are planning a protest tonight calling for more parent involvement. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
