Quinn Delivers State of the City Address
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY February 16, 2007 —City Council Speaker Christine Quinn laid out an ambitious program in her annual State of the City Address yesterday. And as WNYC's Bob Hennelly reports, the speech had the feel of an energetic stump speech.
REPORTER: The Council chamber balcony was festooned with red white and blue bunting and it was standing room only. Speaker Quinn laid out a sweeping agenda that at points sounded visionary while mentioning by name 20% of the Council.
QUINN: Our plan will provide a $300 credit for working families and 1.1 million tenants will benefit.
REPORTER: Quinn warned that without bold action the city's real estate boom would drive the city's middle class out. She called for universal access to pre-K and 10 new health care centers for neighborhoods that are chronically underserved. A potential mayoral run may still be many months away, but the speaker was clearly warming up the spotlight.
