Kelly Creates Task Force on Undercover Operations
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY November 30, 2006 —After the fatal shooting this weekend of Sean Bell during an undercover police operation, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says he’s named a task force to re-evaluate undercover operations. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more.
REPORTER: Kelly says the review of undercover operations will be comprehensive.
KELLY: The committee will examine the recruitment, selection, and training of units employing undercover officers and develop recommendations for improvements.
REPORTER: With the exception of one deputy commissioner from the state's Division of Criminal Justice, the rest of the nine member panel comes from upper management. It'll be chaired by Chief Charles Campisi who heads Internal Affairs. One of the central questions to be resolved is the role of one of the undercover officers who fired first, setting off a series of events that culminated in 50 shots being fired by the other four, killing Sean Bell and injuring two others. For WNYC, I am Bob Hennelly.
