Council Members Call for Independent Investigation of Shooting
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY November 30, 2006 —Following this weekend's fatal police shooting of an unarmed man, some city council members are calling for a quick response. Councilwoman Helen Foster of the Bronx says an independent investigation of the incident is necessary.
FOSTER: We have got to stop burying sons and saying let's not rush to judgment, let's wait and see. The officers didn't wait and see. They didn't wait to see if there was a gun.
REPORTER: Speaker Christine Quinn meets with the council's black, Latino and Asian caucus later today. Several council members say even before this weekend's shooting they were receiving a steady stream of complaints from minority constituents about alleged racial profiling by the NYPD. They police say they do not profile.
