Cell Phones OK for Sick Kids

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY November 09, 2006 —City is amending its no-cell-phones-in-school rule to allow students with medical problems to bring them to school in case of medical emergencies.

New York City bars students from having cell phones in schools. But now the city has set up a system for students to ask for a waiver. The waiver involves a doctor's note explaining the student's ailment and why he or she needs the phone.

The school principal will then have the final say on the request. The student will not be allowed to carry the phone in the school but will have to check it at the office.
