Spitzer Stumps for Working Families Party Line

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY November 07, 2006 —New York Gubernatorial hopeful Elliot Spitzer isn't just running as a Democrat. He's also recorded messages to voters asking them to support him on the Working Families Party ballot line. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

REPORTER: The recorded messages follow a blitz of email messages from actress Cynthia Nixon, feminist Gloria Steinem and musician Pete Seeger. All are supporting Spitzer as the candidate of the Working Families Party. New York State requires minor parties to get at least 50,000 votes in a gubernatorial election to hold onto a coveted ballot line. Working Families Party Executive director, Dan Cantor, says Spitzer ties in with his party's focus on education and housing.

CANTOR: And the more votes we get, the more we're able to advance the interests of working class, middle class and poor people.

REPORTER: The Working Families Party could bump up a notch on the ballot, if it gets more votes than the Conservative line - which has endorsed Republican John Faso. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
