NEW YORK, NY November 03, 2006 —The city will convene a task force to look at what to do about dangerous construction sites. This week alone, one man fell to his death, and two others had to be rescued in hanging scaffold related accidents.

REPORTER: Many of the victims of construction site accidents are immigrants and so the task force says it will make it a priority to educate them about safety regulations and their rights as workers.

Some immigrant groups say the Department of Buildings should also hire more inspectors to crackdown on construction sites that are run without permits. Gonzalo Mercado is from a day laborer job center in Staten Island and says workers there are especially vulnerable because little is known about contractors who pick them up.

MERCADO: We don't know if they're licensed or if they have the proper safety requirements. We don't know where they take them.

REPORTER: Department of Buildings Commissioner Patricia Lancaster will chair the task force. Union heads, building owners and a trade association for contractors will also take part in it. The task force recommendations are expected by December.
