Plans Move Forward for Governors Island Park
by Fred Mogul
NEW YORK, NY October 25, 2006 —The redevelopment of Governors Island is on hold, but officials are moving forward with a plan to create one of the city's most ambitious new parks. WNYC’s Fred Mogul has more.
Last month, the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation tentatively rejected a whole array of proposals by developers. This week, the agency quietly released a new invitation for planners to design the 70-to-90-acre park and promenade that would be the island’s centerpiece.
The latest document, like ones before it, is short on specifics. Instead, it encourages prospective designers to make the most of the open space and the views of the city and Statue of Liberty to, quote, “highlight the sublime, and establish concentrated moments of tone and mood.” If all goes according to schedule, a plan for the park will be selected next spring.
Currently, however, there is no budget for actually building it.
