Senate Race Gets "Ugly"

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY October 24, 2006 —The race for Senate is getting ugly. Republican John Spencer denies making disparaging comments to a Daily News columnist about Democrat Hillary Clinton's appearance.

REPORTER: Spencer insists he never said Clinton used to be ugly, or speculated that she got millions of dollars in plastic surgery. He says the quotes were fabricated from a conversation he had with a Daily News reporter on an airplane.

SPENCER: We were talking about the 60s and how we're all changed and how we're all different and things like that and to end up with something like that I was shocked, I was like "whoa."

REPORTER: Spencer was very busy yesterday, giving interviews to local and national media outlets denying the front page report in the Daily News - which quoted him directly on the plastic surgery remarks, but not on the word ugly. Meanwhile, the News columnist stood by his story.

And a Clinton spokesman said he didn't know which is worse: making insulting comments or lying about them instead of apologizing.
