Con Ed Workers Discover Possible 9/11 Human Remains

by Kathryn Herzog

NEW YORK, NY October 20, 2006 —A startling discovery by Con Ed workers Thursday - human remains, mostly likely those of World Trade Center victims, were found during excavation work near Ground Zero.

The remains, including large bones, were unknowingly discovered by Con Ed workers near the southern edge of the World Trade Center site Wednesday evening. The crew had been excavating material from manholes abandoned after the 9-11 attacks. The materials were hauled to a work center more than a mile away in Chelsea, before workers realized what they uncovered Thursday morning.

Police say there is no evidence of wrongdoing by the utility workers, and an investigation continues.

Yesterday's discovery follows another recent find of human remains. Just last month, hundreds of bone fragments were found on the roof of the Deutsche Bank building near the World Trade Center site.

More than five years after the World Trade Center attacks, the remains of more than 11-hundred victims have not been identified, or found amid the rubble.

A spokesperson with the medical examiner's office says so far no new IDs have been made from Thursday's discovery.
