Spinach Declared Safe to Eat

WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY September 28, 2006 —The CDC has declared Spinach safe to eat again and New Jersey farmers are seeing a bump in sales that had bottomed out for almost a week.

REPORTER: Spinach from Salinas Valley in California was identified as the source of the e-coli outbreak. Dan Graiff, owner of Dan Graiff Farms, said New Jersey's produce was never tainted and consumers should ask where their leafy greens are from

GRAIFF: Consumers have to ask for local grown. It's safe. Instead of California products, consumers have to always ask for locally grown.

REPORTER: Graiff said he's given away fresh spinach lately, just to get people to start eating it again. New Jersey is the fourth largest producer of spinach in the United States.
