Lawmakers Struggle to Adopt Budget in Trenton
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY July 07, 2006 —Despite an agreement that ended the 6-day budget standoff in Trenton considerable pressure remains on lawmakers to actually adopt a specific budget later today.
For the 45,000 furloughed state employees, today will be another day without pay as lawmakers go into overtime to flesh out budget details. Decisions still remain on exactly where to make hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts. Programs on the chopping block include the Governor's proposed $16O millionin aid for higher education and the future of state employee's pensions.
Lawmakers will also need to determine if the state can make-up the last weeks lost wages for public employees locked out of their jobs. Governor Corzine estimated it will take between 24 to 36 hours to get the state back up and running. A key goal for Democratic legislators: to see pictures on the front page of every Sunday newspaper depicting gamblers back in Atlantic City and tourists in state parks.
