Pfizer sells Consumer Health Unit to Johnson & Johnson

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY June 26, 2006 —New Jersey health care products company Johnson & Johnson is buying New York drug maker Pfizer's consumer health care unit for $16-point-6 (B) billion dollars in a nearly all-cash deal.

Pfizer is selling its over-the-counter unit to focus on its prescription drug business.

The deal gives New Brunswick-based Johnson & Johnson such products as Listerine, Visine, Sudafed, Zantac, and Nicorette.

Independent pharmaceuticals analyst Hemant Shah says the deal makes J-and-J "by far the largest" consumer health company.
