Local Politicians Against Proposed Location of Trash Facilities
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY June 26, 2006 — Manhattan politicians banded together to speak out against Mayor Bloomberg's plans to put a garbage facility on East 91st Street, and a recycling transfer site in the Hudson River Park. State Senators Tom Duane and and Liz Kruger, and Assemblymembers Deborah Glick and Pete Granis want the city to study other sites.
Brooklyn City Councilman Charles Barron was unmoved.
BARRON: This is disingenuous...when we raise this issue now...when a site has to be opened up in Manhattan that has no transfer stations.
Barron says any delays in approving the Manhattan portion of the mayor's 20 year garbage plan will keep black and latino neighborhoods bearing the brunt of the city's trash. A vote on the plan is expected this summer.
