NJ Primary Victories Preview US Senate Race
by Bob Hennelly
NEW YORK, NY June 07, 2006 —Last night's primary victory speeches gave New Jersey voters a preview of what to expect during the US Senate campaigns that will be waged between Republican Tom Kean Jr. and Democrat Robert Menendez.
Kean will try to tie Menendez to past Democratic political scandals in Trenton and Governor Jon Corzine's plan to raise taxes to close a multi-billion dollar budget gap. Menendez will counter by making the race a referendum on the Bush Administration and it's conduct of the war in Iraq.
For Kean, the son of a popular former Governor, the race is an uphill climb. No New Jersey Republican won a US Senate seat since the 197Os. The candidates will break with tradition later this month by debating face to face. Typically debates don't get underway until after Labor Day.
