Mob Cops Try for New Trial

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY June 06, 2006 —The two former City police officers convicted of killing eight people while moonlighting for the Lucchese crime family were sentenced to life in prison - but the judge's sentence can't be imposed yet. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

Brooklyn Federal Judge Jack Weinstein called the conspiracy case one of the most heinous series of crimes ever tried in his courthouse. During the hearing, family members of the victims read emotional statements and one called former officers Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa an embarassment to the NYPD.

Eppolito, who did not take the witness stand during the trial, told the court he would prove his innocence later and he invited the family members to visit him in jail to hear his story. T

The defendants have an evidentiary hearing later this month on motions for an acquittal and a new trial. They claim they weren't given adequate legal representation the first time around.
