Thousands All Around the City Protest for Immigrant Rights
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY May 01, 2006 —In Jackson Heights, and Sunset Park in Perth Amboy, and Morrisstown, thousands of immigrants took the day off of work to participate in a Day Without Immigrants. At 12:16, immigrants and their supporters joined hands and formed human chains along the sidewalks in commercial districts in their neighborhoods. The time is symbolic because December 16th is the day that the US House of Representatives passed a bill that makes it a felony to be in the country illegally. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has this report on some of the day's events.
