by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY April 10, 2006 —Thousands of protesters are expected to converge on City Hall at three this afternoon to demand immigration rights. This after a weekend of demonstrations around the country. The plans in New York City are for three marches this afternoon: from Washington Square Park, Chinatown, and Brooklyn.
REPORTER: Immigrants and their supporters are calling today a national day of action. About 70 events are planned across the country. Unions have helped organize today' event at City hall. Hector Figueroa is from local 32BJ - the service employees union:
FIGUEROA: We expect people to congregate at different points in the city and then peacefully walk towards the rally and we have a permit that covers several blocks north of city hall.
REPORTER: Several elected officials including senator charles schumer and congressman Charles Rangel are expected to attend the rally.
A compromise bill that would have granted different rights to immigrants based on how long they've been in the U.S. failed to pass the Senate Friday. The bill is expected to remain in limbo while congress takes a two-week break.
