Transport Union Back in Court Over Fines

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY April 10, 2006 —The Transport Workers Union is heading back to court again today, as the MTA seeks to suspend the union's membership dues following December's 3-day strike. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

Membership dues are worth about 20 million dollars a year. The union claims its management would be crippled without the revenues, and that its members would ultimately suffer. The Transport Workers Union is seeking a separate hearing on the matter. It claims the MTA didn't file the right paperwork back in December.

Meanwhile, the state is already seeking to fine the union $1 million for every day of its 3-day strike. It also wants to personally fine Union President Roger Toussaint and his fellow leaders. The union argues because the strike did not last 3 full days, it not have to pay the full $3 million fine. It also claims the MTA used illegal bargaining tactics which provoked the strike.
