Gov Gives City Power to Double Charter Schools

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY February 08, 2006 —Governor Pataki wants to give the city schools chancellor the power to create up to 50 more charter schools. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

New York State authorized a hundred charter schools when the law was signed in 1998, and the state has now reached that limit. With support from parents and community leaders, Pataki wants to lift the cap. He's now proposing 50 more charter schools for New York City - almost doubling the current number.

Under the plan, the city schools Chancellor would have the power to authorize new schools on his own. Currently, applications are reviewed by the state Board of Regents. A spokesman for State Education Commissioner Richard Mills says the Regents should retain this oversight because they have experience.

Meanwhile, Mayor Bloomberg issued a statement saying he looks forward to getting the proposal passed into law to encourage more educational options. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
