January 19, 2006 —Schools Chancellor Joel Klein outlined his goals for his next four years at the helm of the city's schools. The biggest change in Klein's next term is directed at the way tests scores are used.
Schools currently look at whether their scores on a particular grade go up or down from year to year. But Klein also wants them to look at how each class of students is faring.
For example, whether third graders improve on their fourth grade tests. Those scores will appear on school report cards and they'll help determine whether more help is needed.
Klein is also looking to squeeze another $200 million out of the bureaucracy in coming years. He's using a $5 million grant to hire consultants who will assess whether additional management changes are needed.
