TWU Pension Provision Risks Being Vetoed by Governor
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY December 30, 2005 —A contract provision considered a win for the Transit Workers Union during their bitter labor negotiations with the MTA, could get vetoed by the governor. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports:
The provision would allow for about twenty-thousand transit workers to receive refunds of pension contributions made prior to 2001. The payments could go as high as $14 thousand for some transit employees which would by far offset penalties they might receive for striking. But legislation must get passed for the refunds to go forward and Governor Pataki's office has said he's vetoed similar bills in the past.
A spokeswoman released a statement saying "...we will not reward those who break the law..." Union members will be asked to ratify the contract before the state legislature votes on the refunds in July.
