Brooklyn Dem Leader Found Guilty Second Time
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY December 15, 2005 —A jury has found Brooklyn Democratic Party boss and former Assemblyman Clarence Norman guilty of grand larceny. It's the second time he's been convicted of a felony this year. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
A jury deliberated for nearly a week before finding that Norman committed larceny when he deposited a $5,000 check into his personal bank account. The check was made out to his re-election campaign and was written by a political club he controlled. Norman's attorney had argued the check was simply a reimbursement for money he had advanced to an Assemblywoman.
Prosecutors for the Brooklyn DA wanted Norman immediately jailed. But a judge disagreed and gave him until 4 pm to come up with $100,000 bail. Earlier this year, the 54-year-old Norman was convicted of violating election laws and falsifying records. He could serve up to 4 years in prison in that case.
