ACS Manager Suspended
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY December 14, 2005 —After reviewing the cases of two child deaths, the city has suspended one of its Child Protective managers. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
The Administration for Children's Services says after 16 month old Daquay Gillians died, the manager tried to change documents to show he told a caseworker to look into the mother's possible drug problem. The infant drowned after being left alone in the bathtub. The agency says caseworkers also failed to check whether the mother had gone to court ordered domestic violence counseling and other services.
The death of 7-year-old Sierra Roberts was also investigated. Officials say she saw a doctor for a fractured spine and broken leg before her father beat her to death. When questioned about the injuries, the father contradicted a doctor's diagnosis but a caseworker failed to check out the discrepancy. The city says if an adult had reported the father it could have helped.
