Sen. Clinton Raises Funds for Pakistan Earthquake
by WNYC Newsroom
NEW YORK, NY November 29, 2005 —Seven weeks after a devastating earthquake hit South Asia, Senator Hillary Clinton says she is bewildered by the lack of response from people in the West. The senator, attending a fundraiser last night at the Asia Society, said donor fatigue and the absence of any Western tourists in the region has contributed to the problem.
REPORTER: According to Ali Ahsan, a Pakistani who works at the United Nations, the absence of ongoing media coverage was the most significant factor.
AHSAN: People just don't have the realization right now. I mean, there's a lot of talk of donor fatigue, but I personally think the individual donors who really count, the outpouring will happen, as long as you have images on TV and you just don't see it.
REPORTER: The fundraiser, according to one organizer, raised $150 thousand dollars for the International Rescue Committee. The group is trying to help some of the four million earthquake victims in Pakistan and India.
