Mixed Reaction to Bloomberg's WTC Plans

by Andrea Bernstein

NEW YORK, NY October 25, 2005 —Mayor Bloomberg is getting a mixed reaction to his proposals to alter plans for the World Trade Center site. WNYC's Andrea Bernstein reports.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, whose public expressions of dismay over Lower Manhattan led to his jettisoning the west side stadium, reacted with outrage to the Mayor's suggestion that housing replace commercial development on part of the World Trade Center site.

Senator Charles Schumer said he strongly disagreed with the Mayor's proposal, arguing that all the public investment on the site is to support commercial development to bring jobs to New York City. But Schumer did say the Mayor of New York City should have more control. And there were plenty of leaders in the rebuilding community who privately cheered by the Mayor's recent aggressive displays of interest in Lower Manhattan.

They say the mayor has generally had a more results oriented approach than the Governor. Still few few see exactly how the Mayor can wrest control of the rebuilding process from the port authority and the state, who control it now.
