Bloomberg Defends Subway Threat Announcement
by Andrea Bernstein
NEW YORK, NY October 07, 2005 —Mayor Bloomberg is defending his decision to announce a threat to New York's subway system, despite federal officials questioning the credibility of the source. WNYC's Andrea Bernstein reports.
REPORTER: The Mayor road the subway to work today. He said most of his fellow riders were dozing or reading the paper. At a press conference touting his housing record in Brooklyn, he said it was right to put subway riders on alert, even though the department of homeland security called the threat "of dubious credibility"
BLOOMBERG: It is very different being an analyst in Washington as opposed to being here in New York where you have to take responsibility to protect people's lives.
REPORTER: The Mayor and police commissioner Kelly say yesterday's rush hour announcement was timed to avoid jeopardizing a military operation overseas, which they would not discuss. For WNYC, I'm Andrea Bernstein.
