Democrats Wait on Election Board for Ferrer, Weiner Outcome

by Andrea Bernstein

NEW YORK, NY September 14, 2005 —Democrats now have to wait for word from the Board of Elections to see who will face Michael Bloomberg in the upcoming Mayoral election.

REPORTER: Fernando Ferrer has fallen short of the forty percent of the primary vote he needs to avoid a runoff, but by less than five hundreds of a percentage point, according to last night's unofficial returns. There could be a runoff with the second place finisher, Anthony Wiener.

Not long after 11 pm, Ferrer took the podium at the Puck Building in downtown Manahttan, sounding every bit the general election candidate.

FERRER: The road has been long...we're going to change history.

REPORTER: In an energetic speech, the Democrat ticked off the themes of his campaign - making housing affordable, reducing high school drop out rates, creating opportunity for new yorkers -- repeating the refrain, our time is now. But with 100 percent of precincts reporting Ferrer came just a few hundred votes short of clearling 40 percent out of more than 450,000 cast.

So shortly before midnight, second place finisher Anthony Wiener took the podium to declare he would continue to run, pledging a positive campaign. Wiener took 29 percent, C Virginia Fields 16, and Miller 10.
