by KIathryn Herzog

NEW YORK, NY September 14, 2005 —Several city council members were prohibited from running again this year due to term limits while some incumbents were upset. It adds up to a number of new faces on the city council next term.

Queens Councilman and incumbent Allan Jennings who was plagued by scandal throughout much of his term lost to Thomas White. White served on the city council for 10 years beginning in 1991.

In District 8 which covers East Harlem, the upper West Side and parts of the South Bronx, voters elected the first Latino candidate in several years. It was a close race between Melissa Mark-Viverito and Felipe Luciano with Viverito sqeaking ahead with just more than 25 percent of the vote.

In District 5 on the upper east side, Jessica Lappin, former aide to the City Council Speaker Gifford Miller took the race. In District 41, which covers Oceanhill, Brownsville and Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, transit worker Darlene Mealy beat out the father of the seat's current holder Tracey Boyland.
