Deconstruction of Deutsche Bank Building Begins
by Andrea Bernstein
NEW YORK, NY September 08, 2005 —Years after it was damaged, workers finally have started the process of taking down the former Deutsche Bank Building next to the World Trade Center site.
REPORTER: The 40-story building was damaged during the September 11th attacks. Since then its toxic contents hindered both repair and demolition. Meanwhile, the LMDC wanted the acreage to realize Daniel Libeskinds master plan. Construction workers are first building a hoist to carry out the condemned buildings parts. Construction manager Charles Maikish says the actual dismantling will begin in January.
MAIKISH: 12 You'll be able to see it come down floor by floor so the skyline will change over a period of one year.
REPORTER: Officials say the final EPA approvals came this morning. They say "state of the art" techniques will be employed to avoid releasing toxic materials from the building site. For WNYC, I'm Andrea Bernstein.
