NEW YORK, NY September 02, 2005 —Six design proposals have been selected for a memorial in the Rockaways to commemorate those who died during a November, 2001 plane crash that killed 265 people.

REPORTER: American Airlines Flight 587 was headed to the Dominican Republic when it went down over the neighborhood of Belle Harbor, Queens. Most of the victims were of Dominican descent and many of their surviving family members live in the uptown neighborhood of Washington Heights. The city says it has received their input. Guillermo Linares, the commissioner of Immmigrant Affairs says he will travel to the Dominican Republic tomorrow to share the design proposals with family members there:

LINARES: "This is primarily guided by the family members and members of the community.

REPORTER: The six designs include two curving stainless steel walls about 40 feet long with space for each victim's name, and also a tower with a bell that would ring everyday at 9:16, marking the time of the crash. For WNYC: I'm Cindy Rodriguez
