NEW YORK, NY September 01, 2005 —The Fire Department has added subway cars to its training academy on Randall's Island, in an effort to get all new recruits ready to work underground. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.
REPORTER: There are no rats, and the tracks are strangely free from garbage. But the subway simulator, as it's called, looks a lot like a real station. The transit authority donated two train cars, signals, and a third rail.
They're stored inside a building above ground that's the same size as a tunnel. And the fire academy built a platform complete with subway ads. Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta says the facilty looks real for a reason.
SCOPPETTA: This replicates exactly what our people might meet if there is a fire or an explosion, anything that goes on on a subway car.
REPORTER: Firefighters already use the Coney Island rail yards, but Scoppetta says the new simulator will enable more of them to get trained. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
