Pirro Promises Campaign Based on Issues
by Cindy Rodriguez
NEW YORK, NY August 10, 2005 —If she wins the Republican nomination for United States Senate, Jeanine Pirro promises to run an issue-based campaign. The Republican District Attorney for Westchester rejected claims that she's in the race just to bloody Hillary Clinton. WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports.
REPORTER: Pirro says she comes to the race as a fighter, an advocate and agent for change. She said she supports permanent tax cuts and eliminating a tax on inheritances and calls herself "red" on fiscal policy.
PIRRO: But I've got broad blue stripes on the social issues that don't change depending upon the office that I'm running for.
REPORTER: The announcement did not go smoothly for the candidate. Standing in front of dozens of cameras, Pirro struggled for more than 30 seconds to find a page missing from her speech.
PIRRO: Does anyone have page 10? (sounds of shuffling)
REPORTER: The candidate was joined at the kickoff by her mother and college-age daughter. She said her husband-- who served time in prison for tax fraud -- was working.
