Six Train Earns High Marks on Subway Survey

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY August 10, 2005 —The six train earned the highest marks in an annual survey of subway conditions. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

The non-profit Straphangers Campaign looked at mechanical failures, quality of train announcements, cleanliness and service disruptions for each line. It then came up with a rating based on the $2 fare.

The 6 train earned the highest Metrocard rating, at a $1.35, thanks to its new subway cars. The six could have gotten a higher rating but it performed below average on getting a seat during rush hour and cleanliness.

For the second year in a row the N was ranked the worst subway line - with a metrocard rating of 60 cents due to irregular service. And the G line had the most breakdowns.

The Transit Authority says the report didn't consider changes in routes. It also says the subway system was never designed to offer everyone a seat during rush hour.
