Injured in Stable Condition After Collapse

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY July 14, 2005 —Five people including a baby are in stable condition after they were struck by debris as a building collapsed on Broadway between 99th and 100th streets, at around 9:30 this morning. WNYC's Beth Fertig has more.

REPORTER: Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scopetta says a seven month old baby and four adults were taken to hospitals. Four firefighters also suffered minor injuries. Scopetta says the one-story building was being demolished at the time of the collapse.

SCOPPETTA: It appears that heavy equipment on the roof undoubtedly contributed to it.

REPORTER: The Extell Development Company had a permit to build a 31 story apartment building at the site, and a 37 story building across the street. The Buildings Commissioner says both projects are on hold while her department investigates. Extell released a statement saying it was using a respected union contractor and that its sole concern is for the safety of everyone. For WNYC I'm Beth Fertig.
