Pataki Rides Subway to Prove Safety
by Andrea Bernstein
NEW YORK, NY July 07, 2005 —New York Governor George Pataki took a subway ride today to demonstrate to New Yorkers the subways are safe. Andrea Bernstein reports.
REPORTER: At a press conference at Grand Central station, Governor Pataki said there was no drop-off in subway ridership today. He urged New Yorkers and tourists to continue to go about their business. And then he boarded a number 4 express train.
Pataki: I think people are understandably concerned following the attacks in London and the warnings that Washington has put out for Mass transit across the country and we're going to do everything we can to protect the people and we can't allow us to live in fear.
REPORTER: As the governor wrapped up his thoughts, a subway announcement asking riders to watch for suspicious packages began to play. Pataki got off the train in Lower Manhattan for a meeting on the status of rebuilding efforts. For WNYC, I'm Andrea Bernstein.
