Fine Proposed for Subway Switching

by Beth Fertig

NEW YORK, NY June 27, 2005 —An MTA committee is expected to vote today on a proposal that would fine riders caught walking between subway cars.

Since 1996, New York City Transit says 13 people have been killed while riding between subway cars. More than a hundred others were injured. The transit authority wants to make walking between cars a violation with a fine of $75.

A transit spokesman says police would mainly go after the people who do it most: namely, illegal panhandlers and peddlers. The MTA's Transit Committee is also considering other rules of conduct against riding scooters or skateboards.

Another amendment would prohibit riders from taking up more than one seat while others are standing. A proposal to ban photography in the transit system was dropped earlier this year.
