Feds Release Skyscraper Safety Report

by WNYC Newsroom

NEW YORK, NY June 23, 2005 —Federal investigators recommend skyscrapers use reinforced elevators, wider stairwells and new fireproofing standards.

REPORTER: The report was prepared by the National Institute of Standards and Technology - which spent three years studying the collapse of the World Trade Center. Doctor Shum Sunder is the lead investigator.

SUNDER: We believe strongly that the implementation of the recommendations would make buildings, occupants and first responders safer in future emergencies.

REPORTER: State and local governments would be responsible for adopting any of the recommendations. The head of the American Society of Civil Engineers praised many of the suggestions but he also said they would make construction more expensive.
