NEW YORK, NY June 21, 2005 —The state board of regents is planning to vote today on a plan to phase in tougher graduation requirements.
The proposal is aimed at softening the state's plan to raise the passing score from 55 to 65 on all five Regents exams students need to earn the more prestigious Regents Diploma.
Under the plan students who enter ninth grade this fall would have to score at least 65 on two out of the five Regents exams. Those entering high school in 2006 would have to pass three exams at 65, and so on until the standard shifts to five exams for those entering in 2008.
The state says this standard is within reach because more students are passing their exams. According to the latest graduation data, almost 92 percent of students scored at least a 55 on five required exams; 77 percent scored at 65 or higher.
